Comment: Generally, the site is very dry especially the east side and within the open mire area. The sluices / dams that have been installed do not seem to be effective at holding water in, as water levels are the same on both sides. The ditch that crosses the centre of the site may still be active below the ground. The hydrology of the site requires further investigation. The woodland fails its objective for negative indicator species as it has a very high bramble cover. However, lesser pond sedge is still dominant with a canopy of alder, downy birch and willow over much of the core and west side of the moss. Other species noted within fen and wet woodland areas are great tussock sedge, yellow iris, water mint, marsh bedstraw and marsh cinquefoil. The open mire area is very dry despite the wet summer. The community is largely dominated by cranberry and sphagnum with only occasional common cotton grass and hare's-tail cottongrass. Common heather and cross-leaved heath are only present in localised areas. The mire area fails its objectives due to lack of positive indicator species and the high cover of scrub; these are both indicative of the dry conditions seen. The two areas of mire on the site are separated by an area of fen and this area is reverting back to wet woodland.
