Comment: The unit has been formed by combining units 2, 3 and most of unit 1. It comprises dry and wet heath in the southern part of the unit, dry oak and alder woodland on the southern side of the Sherford valley and a mixture of fen, reedbed and wet woodland along the valley bottom in the north. Previous assessments of this northern part of the unit have identified the expansion of wet woodland at the expense of fen since 1980 and before as a reason for unfavourable condition. This still applies but is now being addressed thorugh a combination of the introduction of grazing and willow clearance. The alder woodland is in favourable condition. For the heathland, a substantial part of the unit support good quality dry, humid and wet heath but locally there are significant areas in need particularly of birch, pine and gorse control (eg gorse around some of the lakes, birch in an area previously cleared of mature pine in the west). There are also areas with rank Molinia that would benefit from grazing. Management measures are being implemented to tackle all of the above issues hence the recovering assessment.
