Comment: The unit includes part of one of the large shingle ridges and part of one of the intervening hollows between ridges. Good quality shingle ridge vegetation is present. The hollow includes a series of pools and a small stream, and the area is of potential value for great crested newts. The unit is also important for its ridge topography and buried geomorphology. The fossil geomorphology appears to be largely intact and sorting of pebbles is evident. There is no evidence of significant recent disturbance of shingle. Vehicles have been crossing the area but this is largely confined to an established track. The shingle ridge is dominated by closed vegetation dominated by mosses and lichens. A high diversity of species is present including Hypnum cupressiforme, Dicranum scoparium, Polytrichum spp, Cladonia spp, Peltigera spp, wood sage and sheep?s fescue. The vegetation is in good condition. Some areas of stable, bare shingle are present towards the southern end. These areas are in good, undisturbed condition also. The pools in the hollow are surrounded by marshy vegetation dominated by sharp-flowered rush. There are also areas of rough, damp grassland and small patches of willow scrub. The mosaic of habitats present and undisturbed nature of the area make it potentially of high value for great crested newts.
