Comment: The unit consists mainly of one of the prominent shingle ridges. Good quality shingle ridge vegetation is present including large patches of the uncommon plant Nottingham catchfly. The unit is also important for its ridge topography and buried geomorphology. The fossil geomorphology appears to be largely intact and sorting of pebbles is evident. There appears to have been major modification of the topography in the past in that there is evidence of mass movement of shingle, perhaps related to the construction of the airport. However, there is no evidence of significant recent disturbance of shingle. Vehicles have been crossing the area but this is largely confined to an established track. The shingle ridge is dominated by closed vegetation dominated by mosses and lichens. A high diversity of species is present including Hypnum cupressiforme, Dicranum scoparium, Polytrichum spp, Cladonia spp, Peltigera spp, wood sage, sheep?s fescue, and most notably large patches of Nottingham catchfly. The vegetation is in good condition. Some scrub and patches of bramble are present but overall cover is considered to be acceptable. Extensive areas of stable, bare shingle are also present towards the southern end. These areas are in good, undisturbed condition also.
