Comment: The unit takes in parts of several of the raised shingle ridges and includes some areas of good quality species-rich shingle vegetation. Parts appear to have suffered disturbance in the past but typical vegetation has re-established and there is no evidence of recent disturbance of the fossil geomorphology. The fossil geomorphology is visible in that the fossil ridge crest topography can still be seen. There is no evidence of disturbance of buried geomorphology. Areas of dry shingle ridge vegetation are present in various places across the unit. The community types vary in composition with some parts grass-dominated, other parts dominated by bryophytes and lichens. The vegetation includes several characteristic plants including wood sage, sheep?s sorrel, sheep?s fescue, common bent and catsear with occasional sea campion and sand sedge. Of particular interest is the presence of the uncommon plant Nottingham catchfly. The mossy and lichen-rich patches have Cladonia lichen and the mosses Dicranum scoparium, Hypnum cupressiforme and Polytrichum spp. The vegetation is maintained in a suitably short condition by rabbit grazing and scrub encroachment is being kept in check by manual clearance.
