Comment: The unit includes several small ponds and an area of vegetated shingle. The margins of the ponds currently have high cover of willow but clearance of some of this scrub is planned. The shingle vegetation is very species-rich and supports a large population of the uncommon plant Nottingham catchfly. There is no evidence of recent disturbance or damage to the buried geomorphology, and access is available to the buried deposits should it be required for research. The ponds are currently more shady than is desirable due to the fringing willow scrub and one of the ponds is completely dominated by dense growth of emergent vegetation. One of the ponds has fish present. However, plans are in place to improve the suitability of the habitat for great crested newt. Terrestrial habitat conditions close to the ponds are currently good for great crested newt. The shingle ridge vegetation present has good representation of characteristic plants. The vegetation includes wood sage, sheep?s sorrel, sheep?s fescue, common bent and catsear with areas dominated by mosses and lichens. Of particular interest is the presence of a large number of Nottingham catchfly plants. The vegetation is maintained in a suitably short condition by rabbit grazing and control of scrub encroachment has been undertaken in part of the area recently.
