Comment: The unit is part of a complex of shingle ridges with coastal frontage. The shingle ridge topography is in good condition although there is localised damage. Extensive areas of good quality shingle ridge vegetation are present and characteristic zonations between vegetation types are well represented. The fossil geomorphology is intact and little disturbed over most of the area. Complex microtopography is clearly evident. Most damage is localised and associated with engineering of the shingle bank along the coast. The dwarf form of broom is locally abundant but not so much that it is obscuring the geomorphology. Behind the coastal shingle bank lies a typical mobile shingle vegetation zone with seakale and yellow horned poppy. Landward, the vegetation is initially dominated by turf dominated by red fescue with birdsfoot trefoil, sea mayweed, lady?s bedstraw, woody nightshade, sea plantain and thrift. This grades into the characteristic dry turf made up of bryophyte/lichen mats with heath bedstraw, catsear, sheep?s-bit, sea campion, sheep?s sorrel, sheep?s fescue, English stonecrop and wood sage. The rare plant red hemp nettle was noted in a few places. No exotic species which might have adverse impacts were noted. For the beach frontage condition assessment please refer to units 1 & 2.
