  1. Variety of breeding bird species

As comments for unit 32 –

Favourable

  1. M23 - Juncus effusus / acutiflorus - Galium palustre rush pasture

The wet grassland vegetation in this unit fails on the

  • ratio of ‘good’ rushes : ‘bad’ rushes.
  • the high cover of species indicative of agricultural improvement.
  • The frequency of positive indicator species.

The low frequency of positive indicator species is real. The unit doesn’t seem to contain enough positive indicator species. However, the sward structure is good despite the high ratio of bad to good rushes. It has improved quickly following the recent introduction of beneficial management (rush-cutting, cattle grazing and raised water levels). Breeding lapwing have begun to use the unit after many years of neglect.
