Comment: The habitat throughout this unit continues to provide excellent habitat for breeding bird species. The assessment was made outside of breeding season, so an indication of breeding activity and success was not appropriate, but the habitat would suggest that conditions continue to be suitable. An assessment of this unit against the criteria in Table 3f suggests favourable condition as habitat suitable for upland breeding birds ? all measures of favourable condition were met across the unit as a whole. Blanket Bog assessment was carried out on a small area of this unit which is recorded as M19 bog with the rest of the blanket bog habitat showing continued recovery since the last assessment. Species composition consisted of Calluna vulgaris, Eriophorum vaginatum - Dominant. Erica tetralix and Trichophorum cespitossum - Abundant. Eriophorum angustifolium, Sphagnum capillifolium and S. Palustre ? Frequent. Empetrum nigrum, Drosera spp., S. Fallax, S. papillosum and lichen ? Occasional. Narthecium ossifragum and Pleurocarpus mosses ? Rare. Each quadrat had a minimum of 7 species with 100% of vegetation cover made up of 3 or more indicators. A large proportion of the cover was made up of Erioph vag or Trich cesp or ericaceous spp at an average of 55% cover. Dwarf shrubs were recorded at each quadrat with an average 37% dwarf shrub cover at each stop. The age range was understandably limited across the site, given the history and the wetness of this area, with Heather height recorded at an average height of 8cm in predominantly pioneer stage. No burning present across the whole unit and no overgrazing recorded.
