Comment: The unit consists of a hill-top blanket bog on Westend Moor, with an eastern fringe of dry heath an area of acid grassland at the irregularly shaped northern corner of the unit. The blanket bog failed on frequency of indicator species, although 7 indicator species were consistently frequent: heather, crowberry, bilberry, common cotton grass, hare?s tail cotton-grass, bog mosses and pleurocarpus mosses. Cloudberry was also recorded as occasional. The dry heath passed on frequency and cover of indicator species in all quadrats, with heather and bilberry present in every quadrat. Cowberry and crowberry were also recorded as occasional, and cross-leaved heath as rare. There is an area of large, deep peat haggs within the hill-top blanket bog habitat near the southern boundary of the unit. This area is showing good signs of recovery with common cotton-grass re-colonising the areas of bare peat. There were no signs of aggravated livestock associated erosion of the haggs which appeared to be stable. There are some historic grips towards the south-east of the unit but they appear to be filling in naturally and are no longer active.
