Comment: The unit is split up into 3 main areas; Top of the hill (SW of unit) - favourable blanket bog, Bottom of the hill (N of unit) - unfavourable blanket bog with M6 flush and acid grassland to the East of the unit. 15 quadrats were done in each of the blanket bog areas. The higher part of the unit had 11 quadrats with good species diversity including Calluna vulgaris, Empetrum nigrum, Eriophorum vaginatum, Pleurocarpus mosses, Rubus chamaemorus, Vaccinium myrtillus present in almost all quadrats. The lower part of the unit had a less uniform and taller heather cover and some sections of relatively young burns. Species diversity was not as good across this area with only 8 of the 13 quadrats having 6 or more species. (2 recorded stops were used merely to record an area of erosion and a young burn). This section showed a more fragmented mosaic of vegetation with grass/rush areas and areas of bog with varying species diversity. The wetter areas showed a good range of species, including; Calluna vulagris, Empetrum nigrum, Eriophorum vaginatum and angustifolium, Pleurocarpus mosses, Sphagnum Capillifoium and Fallax and Vaccinium myrtillus. The area of M6 flush was also fragmented with patches dominated by Juncus spp and Polytrichum and patches of Eriophorum angustifolium with a Fallax and Capillifolium sphagnum carpet. The acid grassland area had no signs of bare ground or negative species. It consisted of a mosaic of areas dominated by Juncus spp. with a ground cover of Sphagnum and areas of short grassland with close rabbit grazing.
