Comment: Unfavourable ? recovering. Blanket bog occupies about a quarter of the south-eastern part of this 92 ha unit. Compliant with CSM attributes apart from lack of range of indicator species, e.g. Calluna vulgaris is the main dwarf shrub and has replaced Erica tetralix and also Sphagnum cover is lacking in places, due to a history of intensive burning. Dry heath areas, occupying about a third of the unit, were in favourable condition apart from a lack of older and mature heather, again because of past burning practice together with grazing pressure. Grazing levels are now generally satisfactory, though marginal in some places with about 33% shoots grazed. However, gradual recovery of blanket bog and dry heath areas should now happen under a new HLS agreement (started November 2008), which controls stocking rates and prevents burning on all of the unit apart from the blanket bog area which may only be burnt on a longer rotation of 12-18 years. The rest of the unit is comprised of acid grassland and species poor M6c acid flush vegetation (Juncus effusus and Sphagnum mainly fallax); these areas meet CSM attribute targets.
