Comment: The unit consists of blanket bog on the top of Carrshield Moor, with dry heath either side and acid grassland at the lowest points. The dry heath is quite fragmented where it meets the acid grassland and is interspersed with large areas of rush. The blanket bog failed on frequency of indicator species, and only 4 indicator species were consistently frequent: heather, crowberry, hare?s tail cotton-grass and pleurocarpus mosses. Bilberry and common cotton-grass were occasional and cross-leaved was also present but rare. The dry heath failed on frequency of indicator species, although 2 indicator species were frequent: heather and bilberry. Cowberry was also recorded but was rare. A layer of mosses and non-crustose lichens were present in all but 1 quadrat. The dry heath failed on cover of indicator species, with less than 50% cover being recorded in 4 of 7 quadrats. The diversity of the sphagnum layer was limited, with Sphagnum fallax being the only sphagnum species recorded in 3 of 8 quadrats.
