Comment: The habitat throughout this unit continues to provide excellent habitat for breeding bird species. The assessment was made outside of breeding season, so an indication of breeding activity and success was not appropriate, but the habitat would suggest that conditions continue to be suitable. An assessment of this unit against the criteria in Table 3f suggests favourable condition as habitat suitable for upland breeding birds ? all measures of favourable condition were met across the unit as a whole. An area of gully erosion previously noted around Gorcock Springs does not seem to be being exacerbated by present management. This area will be suggested for survey and monitoring in partnership with the AONB Peatscapes project, as part of the proposed HLS agreement. Blanket Bog assessment was carried out on the higher west half of the unit. The habitat is relatively species rich in most places with a high diversity and cover of sphagnum species. Species composition consisted of Calluna vulgaris, Eriophorum vaginatum - Dominant. Sphagnum capillifolium Pleurocarpus mosses ? Abundant. Erica tetralix, Empetrum nigrum, Vaccinium myrtillus, Eriophorum angustifolium, S. Fallax ? Frequent. Trichophorum cespitossum, Sphagnum papillosum ? Occasional. Vaccinium vitis-idaea, Rubus chamaemorus, Narthecium ossifragum? Rare. Each quadrat had an average 95% of vegetation cover made up of 3 or more indicators. A high proportion of the cover was made up of Erioph vag or Trich cesp or ericaceous spp at an average of 43% cover. Dwarf shrubs were recorded at each quadrat with an average 65% dwarf shrub cover at each stop. The age range was varied across the site, with Heather height recorded at an average of 18cm in predominantly building stage, but pioneer heather was also present. No burning was present and no overgrazing recorded. Continued management through the HLS should maintain the recovery of the site.
