Comment: There is evidence of suppression due to grazing issues (rabbit and sheep), and a lack of dwarf shrub diversity (predominantly Calluna vulgaris) To the south east of the unit the dry heath is very broken up and a high proportion of heath is being converted into white grass. There is very little late mature stage growth apparent due to grazing. Burning is still occurring on areas where grazing is high contributing to an enhanced rate of heather loss and on steep slopes. The blanket bog is in particularly good condition to the north of the unit and easily passes a condition assessment. Grazing animals largely avoid this deap peat area and burning has been limited and little drainage has occurred. Therefore blanket bog is in excellent condition with a very diverse range of species including abundant lesser twayblade in the wettest, carex rich areas. This bog would benefit from being taken out of the burning rotation as the light level of management has created this feature. Elsewhere patches of bog (wet heath) are showing signs of grazing and some damage to the marginal bog near Pecklars gate has occurred due to hot burns which have damaged the peat layer. Overall the blanket bog passes a condition assessment. An HLS agreement has now been signed to address the remaining issues identified therefore the unit is assessed as unfavourable recovering.
