This unit spans across the road with the majority of the unit occurring on Dryburn Moor, west of the road. On this part of the common, the vegetation appeared to reflect that of allotment land with only one very small area of bog surrounded by acid grassland and spp poor flush. Sheep dung was frequent across this area and the cover of soft rush was very high, covering up to 30% on a visual scale. Above the road, the vegetation comprised degraded M20 blanket bog with dry heath around the rocky outcrops. 8 quadrats were assessed in the blanket bog and they all failed on the cover and number of positive indicator species. Hare's tail cotton grass was frequent across the area together with dense stands of Polytrichum commune. Sphagnum cover was very limited. Other species recorded included crowberry, heather and common cotton grass, however their cover was infrequent. The grazing pressure could not be assessed in 3 of the stops due to the lack of dwarf shrubs. Where dwarf shrubs were present, the grazing level was extremely high with at least 70% of the shoots being grazed. There were a number of drains across the unit, however these were self blocking. The dry heath around the rocky outcrops was in much better condition compared to below the road, at least 2 spp were present and the dwarf shrubs showed little signs of grazing pressure. Overall, the unit failed on grazing pressure (particularly on the blanket bog) and area below the road, cover of positive indicator species (of the bog) and overall cover of soft rush.
