Comment: This unit continues to provide high quality breeding bird habitat, although an assessment of breeding activity was not appropriate as the condition assessment was undertaken outside of the bird breeding season. However, one nest site discovered appeared to be that of either Curlew or Golden Plover, judging by egg remains present, which supports the assessment of continued good quality habitat provision. Other nest sites were considered to be those of Red Grouse for which the moor is managed. Blanket Bog assessment was carried out the area previously recorded as degraded bog. The habitat is very wet and species rich in most places with a high diversity and cover of sphagnum species. Species composition consisted of Calluna vulgaris, Eriophorum vaginatum, Sphagnum capilifolium - Dominant. Empetrum nigrum, S. Fallax, Pleurocarpus mosses ? Abundant. Eriophorum angustifolium ? Frequent. Erica tetralix, Vaccinium myrtillus ? Occasional. Trichophorum cespittosum, Rubus chamaemorus, Drosera sp. And Sphagnum papillosum ? Rare. Each quadrat had an average 99% of vegetation cover made up of 3 or more indicators. A low proportion of the cover was made up of Erioph vag or Trich cesp or ericaceous spp at an average of 36% cover. Dwarf shrubs were recorded at each quadrat with an average 72% dwarf shrub cover at each stop. The age range was varied across the site, with Heather height recorded at an average of 30cm in predominantly building stage, but pioneer and mature heather was also present. No burning was present and no overgrazing recorded. Continued management through the HLS should maintain the recovery of the site. An assessment of this unit against the criteria in Table 3f suggests favourable condition as habitat suitable for upland breeding birds ? all measures of favourable condition were met across the unit as a whole.
