Comment: The vegetation grades towards acid grassland on slopes, particularly in the north-east of the unit. However, a good proportion of BB indicator species remain, with a noticeable understorey of sphagnum mosses, and evidence of dwarf shrub species still present in the sward, particularly in the southern section of the unit, between Hearty Cleugh and Black Cleugh. This unit continues to provide high quality breeding bird habitat, although an assessment of breeding activity was not appropriate as the condition assessment was undertaken outside of the bird breeding season. An assessment of this unit against the criteria in Table 3f suggests favourable condition as habitat suitable for upland breeding birds ? all measures of favourable condition were met across the unit as a whole. Blanket Bog assessment was carried out the area previously recorded as degraded bog. The habitat has shown continued recovery since the last assessment. Species composition consisted of Calluna vulgaris, Eriophorum vaginatum, Sphagnum capilifolium - Dominant. Erica tetralix, S. Fallax ? Abundant. Eriophorum angustifolium, Trichophorum cespitossum, Drosera sp. Sphagnum papillosum? Frequent. Empetrum nigrum, Pleurocarpus mosses, lichen ? Occasional. Vaccinium oxycoccus, Vaccinium vitis-idaea, Narthecium ossifragum ? Rare. Each quadrat had a minimum of 7 species with 99% of vegetation cover made up of 3 or more indicators. A large proportion of the cover was made up of Erioph vag or Trich cesp or ericaceous spp at an average of 53% cover. Dwarf shrubs were recorded at each quadrat with an average 43% dwarf shrub cover at each stop. The age range was understandably limited across the site, given the history, with Heather height recorded at an average height of 11cm in predominantly building stage. No burning was present and no overgrazing recorded.
