Comment: This 23.68 ha unit has the northern third fenced off and no birds were found here during a walk across in spite of the diverse structure ? rushy area (Juncus effusus) to the east on lower slopes and shorter grasses to the west, NVC U6 grading into U5 . The larger central area north of the Hartley Burn has a rush acid grassland mosaic, with more U5 grass higher up the slope. A Snipe was disturbed in the rush and a pair of Lapwing and a single in the more improved grassland nearer the western access point. The area south of the burn had a greater rush cover and a pair of Curlew were seen nesting at the higher end (south-west of the Hartley Cleugh SSSI). Overall rush cover was estimated as between 10 & 20%, both denser areas and aggregated clumps within acid grassland, providing a diverse structure for a range of waders - refer to site monitoring file for map notes. The visit was made in the morning during still and overcast conditions, with some light rain. The parcel has been managed under an HLS bird prescription during the last 2 years. Unit 43 was not covered in the RSPB 1994 survey or the 2005 North Pennines Breeding Wader Survey. The units were assessed as part of the 2007 North Pennine Moors SPA survey. This survey followed the Brown and Shepherd (1993) methodology, finding 1 Curlew, 2 Lapwing, 1 Snipe. The baseline score for this unit would be 4. This 2009 CA found 1 pair Curlew, 3 Lapwing and a Snipe. The condition is therefore Favourable.
