Comment: The results of the survey indicate that the vegetation on Bulbeck Common reflects some negative impacts from both burning and grazing. In particular, the diversity of dwarf shrubs and frequency of bryophytes and lichens do not meet targets for the SSSI features. Much of the negative impact on the vegetation can be ascribed to historic burning and grazing pressures. The attributes that have been surveyed on Bulbeck Common that indicate current pressures are `browsing on dwarf shrub shoots? and `burning in sensitive areas?. Current grazing pressure was not found to be an issue. Within the dry heather heath vegetation, which represents the vast majority of the unit, current grazing pressure met the target 90% pass rate, 94% of samples passed. The `burning in sensitive areas? attribute was met at 100% of samples in dry heath vegetation. However, burning of the moss/ lichen layer was noted at 12% of samples. There should be an increase in species diversity and frequency due to management agreed under HLS, but this is unlikely to be a rapid change.
