Reason for adverse condition: AGRICULTURE - UNDERGRAZING,

The meadows on the south side of the mere have been lightly grazed with Hereford cattle for the last few years, achieving a varied structure and improved species composition with abundant Devil's-bit Scabious, Marsh Valerian and Blunt-flowered Rush. Increased wetness has also benefited Greater Tussock Sedge which has spread from the mere margins into the wet peat of the meadows. Two indicators which have not yet reappeared are Marsh Helleborina dn Grass of Parnassus.
