Comment:

Main part of this unit is dry species poor semi-improved grassland on sandy ground which slopes down to the mere, the criteria feature being restricted to a narrow fringe of reedswamp beside the mere. The extent of this fringing vegetation has increased since PA Angling Club have controlled the impact of geese grazing and reduced the Alder trees. There are patches of Typha latifolia, Phragmites communis with other species such as Carex elata, Carex paniculata, Lythrum salicaria, Bolboschoenus laticarpus, Calamogrostis canescens and Sparganium erectum. The dry grassland needs to remain in zero inputs to minimise diffuse pollution to the mere, managed by extensive grazing and preferably hay cutting to improve the species richness and would benefit from control of docks and thistles.
