Comment: An analysis of bird data (mean peaks, 2009-13) was undertaken comparing the yearly population size to the baseline figure stated for each species. For Arctic, Common, Roseate, Sandwich and Eider the breeding population fell by 25% (see below) and therefore the species is in unfavourable condition. Population trends for the Farnes have been compared to National trends and bird population on Coquet Island. Vegetation management on the island still needs to be addressed as this is compromising suitable nesting conditions, rabbit grazing is proposed for 2014-15. The decline for different species may be down to a number of factors i.e. predation, sea temperature rise, and shifts in species distribution. Further investigation and monitoring with other neighbouring tern sites i.e. Coquet Island and Lindisfarne will be carried out to help determine population numbers and distribution. Figures are as follows (in pairs): Species Baseline (1984) Mean peak (2009-13) Eider 1700 601, Sandwich tern 4000 953, Common tern 183 98, Arctic tern 4000 2002 Guillemot 6000 43316 (inds.) Puffin 14000 38398. No Baseline available for the following species: Cormorant, Shag, Kittiwake. A downward trend in Cormorants and Shags needs careful monitoring.
