Comment: All remedies for this unit are now underway, specifically Diffuse Water Pollution Plan which was signed off by EA and NE Aug 2010. A perimeter walk survey only was completed on 15 July 2010, macrophyte present in good numbers and much improved since silt pumping works. This work will continue through HLS which should go live Sept 2010. Extent of all key habitat (open water, reedbed/fen and wet woodland) are maintained with no apparent loss or reduction. Scrub in reedbeds is >5%. Populations of non breeding birds maintained. Aggregations of breeding birds ? breeding populations of bearded tit, marsh harrier, pochard and shoveler exceed site target. Bittern numbers are still of concern with evidence of one booming male only. Assemblage of breeding bird ? BTO index and variety of breeding birds exceeds totals recorded at time of designation. Otters ? Extensive otter activity throughout year. 2 young (yearling?) otters regularly sighted on the reserve. (RSPB Annual Report 2009) Invertebrates ? no up to date information for notable species of hoverfly, craneflies and small eggar moth. New surveys required.
