Comment: Large unit with approximately 40% woodland, and large areas (50%) of scrub on variable soil types and, in places, steeply sloping ground. Woodland is in places mature beech or oak with birch, field maple, rowan, cherry, sallow and more occasionally sycamore and ash. Large parts are secondary woodland mainly of birch but with good native regeneration. Shrub layer includes hawthorn holly and occasionally hazel, most appears to be non intervention with plenty of fallen and standing deadwood. Ground flora is mainly dominated by brambles and bracken with some areas of bare ground, no negative woodland indicators. About half the unit is mixed scrub at a variety of stages, recolonising after rotational management, comprising gorse (including dwarf gorse), birch, bracken and bramble. Within this area are pockets of chalk heath in places small open areas dominated by ling and bell heather some at the pioneer stage and others with more mature stands. Acid grassland areas are species poor with a mixture of fescue and agrostis species. Areas of chalk grassland are species rich in places with thyme, salad burnet, mouse-ear hawkbit, hare bell, carline thistle, eyebright, and small scabious. Bracken and birch scrub still dominating large areas (<40%)hence unfavourable recovering.
