Comment:

The extent of the woodland remains intact in this Yew dominated woodland with Beech, Ash, Birch and Whitebeam with occasional Large-leaved lime, Sallow, Field Maple, Horse Chestnut and Oak. Sycamore was present but rare. Mistletoe was present in the canopy of the lime. The shrub layer is diverse, with a healthy population of native Box, showing no signs of blight, as well as Bramble, Wild Privet, Dogwood, Holly, Rose, Hazel, Hawthorn, Spindle and Wild Clematis. The areas which had been recently cleared of Cherry Laurel and Buddleia were regenerating with ash, birch, beech and holly and provided good open areas in the woodland structure. Small amounts of Laurel and Buddleia is present, this will need to be monitored and removed as necessary. There is good variation and structure throughout the woodland; with areas of dense Yew canopy and open glades with a wide range of ground flora; Dogs Mercury, Wood Sage, Pale Yellow St. John’s Wort, Hemp Agrimony, Daphne laureola were present. The unit has plenty of fallen and standing dead wood providing good habitat for saproxylic invertebrates. There were also numerous species of fungi present including Mycena species and Snowy Waxcap.
