Comment: Part of the designed landscape of Gatton park with a variety of mature trees reflecting this and the variable soil types. Mature ash, sycamore, beech, yew and horse chestnut with occasional mature oak and cherry. In Nut wood an area of actively coppiced sweet chestnut. Shrub layer also varied with hazel, hawthorn, field maple, holly with occasional box, spurge laurel and buddlea (<5%). Ground flora variable with areas dominated by nettles and brambles or ivy and others with dogs mercury, enchanters nightshade, creeping jenny, bluebells and various ferns. Plenty of deadwood and no negative indicators. Several managed rides, although used as bridleways, with chalk grassland species and areas of grazed open parkland frequent salad burnet, birdsfoot trefoil, marjoram and rough hawkbit. Occasional species include dwarf thistle, cowslip, and eyebright, more rarely lady?s bedstraw, oxeye daisy, fairy flax, thyme and basil. Parts recently cleared of scrub and `recovering? but providing good structure and variety of vegetation.
