Comment:

Beech, yew, ash dominated unit on a south facing slope over a chalk mine, with box, privet and holly understory. Also field maple and white beam present.

Extent of the woodland remains intact, though there is evidence of an informal cycle track having been cut through the wood – to the detriment of the box, cut branches of the trees and ground flora in places. This route exits at the mine entrance over a sink hole by the quarry, which is both dangerous and also potentially disturbing to other features of interest such as bats. Otherwise the woodland has a good structure, with many areas of saplings and also decaying wood habitat. In places interesting ground flora can be found where not under dense beech or yew shade, including wood melick, sweet woodruff, wood avens, dog’s mercury and herb Robert. Pond at the bottom of the slope adds to the units habitat interest.
Deer browsing was evident in this unit, together with the disturbance by cyclists, these are threats to the favourable condition that this unit is currently in.
