Comment:

The unit has remained unmanaged since the last assessments in 2012 and 2006. The overall unit condition remains at unfavourable declining. There has been a further reduction in extent of Dry Heath due to invasion by conifers and dense bracken and a further reduction in extent of Wet Heath due to conifers and dense scrub. Molinia is too dense and tussocky in some areas of the unit and potentially suitable areas for Smooth Snake and Sand Lizard are too shaded by trees and bracken. During the visit in July evidence of garden waste being dumped at the edges of the site and a small area being used as a garden extension was noted. A few plants of Hardy Geranium from this garden extension area has spread further into the site. This needs to be addressed to prevent enrichment and further spread of undesirable plant species. Across the unit appropriate management is required to restore the heathland habitats including tree/scrub clearance, control of regrowth, bracken management, cutting of Molinia tussocks, reintroduction of grazing with suitable hardy livestock.
