Comment: This unit is a band of wide saltmarsh grazed by cattle which venture far from the sea wall over much of the marsh width. The vegetation is characterised by low-mid marsh with a band of pioneer species to seaward. Characteristic species include sea purselane and sea meadow grass, often in large spreading patches, together with and sea aster and a diverse suite of mid-marsh pl;ants such as greater sea spurrey, sea lavender and sea arrow grass. There are small areas of upper marsh, characterised by red fescue grass but with a rare appearance from sea wormwood along the strandlne below the sea bank - this upper marsh vegetation is very rare in The Wash. The saltmarsh meets the targets for the number of characteristic species and there are no signs of man-made interference that would affect its development. Vegetation zonation here is some of the best in the SSSI including, as it does, upper marsh.
