Comment: The unit comprises a mainly even aged mature Oak canopy. Little open space, no glades or formal ride structure through the wood, so this could be addressed by some localised felling to open up canopy and encourage some understory/young growth. Standing and fallen dead wood found throughout. Canopy cover is high (c90%), understory sparse (holly, rowan, birch; c20%). Deer browsing absent. No coppice management in this unit at present, though should be encouraged to get more structure in the wood. Over 95% of the wood is appropriate native species, though some large planted softwoods around the periphery. Some rhododendron beside the visitor centre which needs to be addressed. No disease or recent decline in mature trees noted. Leucobryum juniperoideum found at several locations through the wood. Overall, site remains in RECOVERING condition.
